Although it is much larger and brighter than the famous Orion Nebula, it is not very well known in America and Europe due to that it can only be seen in the southern hemisphere. Carina is so large, a few named mini-nebulae reside within its boundaries.

—

On most plastic jars, containers and other packaging of products you buy, you’ll find what’s generally accepted as the recycling logo with a number in the middle and sometimes letters underneath stamped into the plastic.

The recycling logo can be a little misleading - just about anything can be recycled, but sometimes not without major effort. It’s a little bit like extracting oil from under the ocean bed compared to extracting oil from tar sands; none of it’s really good as such, but some plastics are far, far worse than others.

The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) implemented the system in 1988 to allow recyclers to be able to tell the different types of plastics when sorting. Basically, the numbers in the triangle indicate the grade of plastic - the resin ID code. It’s now a system that’s used in many different countries.

The following is what to look for and what it all means. If you’re in a rush, you might like to download my free plastics recycling cheat sheet (PDF) - it’s a handy tool you can print out and pin up where you have your garbage and recycling bins - and saves you having to remember what each code signifies.

—

The President condemns the “despicable” attacks at Fort Hood, honoring those who were killed and injured. He also commends those who stood up to help and console those affected: “even as we saw the worst of human nature on full display, we also saw the best of America.”

—

Scientists have finally identified the mysterious source of X-ray emissions at the center of our galaxy’s youngest supernova: Inside the remains of Cassiopeia A sits a baby neutron star surrounded by a thin layer of carbon. Discovered in Chandra’s “First Light” image obtained in 1999, the point-like X-ray source at the center of Cas A was presumed to be a neutron star, or pulsar, the typical remnant of an exploded star, but it surprisingly did not show any evidence for X-ray or radio pulsations.
Pulsars rank at or near the top of freaky phenomena found in our Universe. In the early 1930s, California Institute of Technology astrophysicist, Fred Zwicky, an immigrant from Bulgaria, focused his attention on a question that had long troubled astronomers: the appearance of random, unexplained points of light, new stars.

—

In 1955, Doctor Emmet Lathrop Brown was standing on a toilet hanging a wall clock when he slipped and beat his head on the bathroom sink. Unconscious, Doc had a vision. And that vision was that of a flux capacitor — the device that makes time travel possible. The rest, my friends, is history. Or should I say, future? Time travel joke!
